Circular economy is the future. A company that does not recognize this in time and does not act can easily findd itself at a competitive disadvantage. Fortunately, the use of a circular economic model involves many savings, for example, through the implementation of industrial symbiosis.

What´s the solution?

Grabbing one of the pillars of the circular economy, at the ALTEO Group several operating and long-term sustainable collaborations have been realised in the recent years. We have found several solutions that waste for one organization can serve as a base for the other to achieve its own business goals in its portfolio. A good example of this is our services to MOL Petrolkémia Zrt.

The “waste gases” (hydrogen, methane, and inert gases containing mixtures of these) generated in the plants of the chemical company are not flared or let out into the atmosphere, instead they are used for energetics utilization in the plants of ALTEO. Or, for example, the operation of our biogas plant in Nagykőrös could be a good example, as the utilization of the fermentable waste processed here for energy purposes avoids the depositing of these wastes on landfills. Meanwhile, the end-product biogas fertilizer can serve as a valuable nutrient for organic farming in the surrounding farmland.

Business connection

In addition to we provide the total desalinated water demand of MPK, we can significantly reduce the amount of water withdrawn from the Tisza River by recirculating the waste water generated in their plants (consumers). Besides this, we can reduce the use of the chemicals in the plant and the (indirect and direct) environmental impact of its production and channelling. With the utilization of expired food waste that can be fermented into biogas, with the unsuitable by-products, with the animal fertilizers or with the agricultural products and by-products, we can reduce the amount of high organic matter waste deposited on landfills in the long run.

Results

The result of effective cooperation is proven by long-term contracts and various capacity-building investments in recent years. With the implementation of the new 4th boiler of MPK, in addition to serving increasing heat demand, we also reduce the environmental load and the use of natural gas by utilizing waste gases. In addition to the increasing capacity requirements, the Tisza-WTP Water Treatment Plant’s capacity-building project aimed to maximize the return of the condensate. The actual impact can be measured by the quantity of GHGs and other air pollutants eliminated each year, the amount of chemicals saved, and the degree of prevention of Tisza water use. We believe in the usefulness of this so much, that our waste management division was established in 2019 to find an opportunity for even more extensive application.
