In 2009, Nespresso launched its comprehensive, sustainable and innovative program called Ecolaboration ™, which includes sustainable coffee procurement, the recycling of capsules and the development of energy-efficient coffee machines. We have been recollecting the used aluminum coffee capsules in our stores in Hungary since 2012 and since 2017 it can also be implemented with the help of our courier service. The aluminum capsules are used as raw materials for domestic products and coffee grounds are recycled through composting.

What´s the solution?

A significant rate of the adult population consumes each and every day, which has a significant environmental impact.

Millions of consumers use Nespresso’s user-friendly aluminium coffee capsules every day, so the company takes responsibility for its activities by offering a free capsule recollecting bag for its consumers, taking them back and ensuring its recycling.

In Hungary, we have been collecting used capsules in our stores since 2012, and from 2017 onwards, our courier service can return their used capsules simply and comfortably when delivering their orders from their homes.

Capsules are processed in special recycling centres around the world: the coffee grounds are recycled by composting, while new aluminium products are made from used coffee capsules this way entering into the domestic aluminium production cycle.

Our goal is to expand the capacity of recollection to 100% considering the used aluminium capsules until 2020, thus allowing the total recycling of the capsules in the market.

Business connection

The coffee capsules handed in will be processed and recycled by our partner with the right method and expertise. Recycled aluminium is added to domestic aluminium production through wholesalers. Recycled aluminium can also be used for our daily surrounding objects, but also for popular world-famous glass frames.

Results

At the moment 80% of the sold coffee capsules can be recycled, while there are 14.000 Nespresso collection points worldwide and the recycling programs are present in 30 countries.
