Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. for Applied Research aims to contribute to the competitiveness and efficiency of Hungarian companies by providing services in innovation and technology transfer in cooperation with Hungarian and foreign partner institutions. We offer our customers – currently more than 200 companies – complex scientific and technological solutions in several areas of expertise, devised in a way to enhance their competitiveness.

One of the most dominant elements of competitiveness is environmental awareness and sustainability – on the level of technologies as well. Our environmental researches, including biotechnology, sensors and waste logistics, combine complex approaches, which shows the direction of professional development in our company.

Part of the medium and long-term strategy of the Bay Zoltán Research Institute is to explore the technical and economic potential in the Circular Economic Strategy for Hungary and to facilitate the implementation of these for Hungarian actors. In the field of circular economy, we have implemented 36 international and domestic projects over the last five years, which shows that our activity and professional strategy are organically linked to EU policies.

What´s the solution?

We deal with areas of industrial pollution primarily as a problem to be treated from an environmental point of view, while the maintenance and the remediation of contaminated sites are currently a cost to the owners and operators. With the approach presented by us, these areas can, in parallel with the implementation and operation of remediation technologies, reintegrate into value-creating economic processes.

In terms of their location, the contaminants are mainly found in deeper layers of the soil or in the landfill. In both cases, it is possible to use microorganisms to reduce, recover or fix contaminants – at the same time crop production might be done on the surface of the site or landfill, which plays a dual role: on the one hand physically fixes the soil structure and helps functioning the bacteria; and on the other hand it can be a source of value added chemical raw materials (organic acids, medicinal compounds, etc.). By the appropriate chemical processing of biomass, the level of possible contamination can be reduced completely.

Required resources: expert background, machines used in remediation technologies.

The duration of interventions depends on the quality and quantity parameters of the pollution – 1-5 years.

Risks: technology combines crop production and remediation – so cooperation and openness of authorities is important. From the professional side, the selection of the appropriate plant population and the processing protocol are of high importance, as well as the assessment of the area, the modeling of processes, and the construction of an appropriate logistics network.

Business connection

Because the revenue (plant active ingredients), is connected to a cost-related liability, this is considered to be the business benefit of the application.

It should be emphasized among the social benefits that basically, growing plants in small areas requires a lot of manual work, thus creating jobs for the low-skilled.

Sustainability depends on organization – besides proper logistics and preliminary surveys, a biomass supplier network can be established which makes the remediation process sustainable.


As an R&D organization, the greatest result for our company is that we have been able to demonstrate our experiments in real-life conditions, which allows us to generate new projects, as well as we are known by the industry players.

The services related to our activity (bioremediation, fermentation, analytics) result in continuous revenue, because developments are always carried out together with the corporate partners, therefore our main indicator is the value of corporate orders from the established service portfolio.
