Grundfos Manufacturing Ltd.

Our aim is to reduce group level water consumption by 25% by 2018, and by 50% by 2025 as compared to 2008. We are now at 28%. This means that even if we produce more, or open new factories, we still need to reduce absolute water consumption. This is a really progressive approach to sustainability: as the ecological frame is given, we need to find our business strategy within it. Improvements are supported by clear target setting, action plans and monthly data monitoring; we encourage our employee to think water-wise. In our Hungarian factories in 2015 we were able to save almost 3000 m3 of drinking water – equivalent to almost 5% of our yearly consumption – by using rainwater for filling testers, cooling towers and flushing toilets. On the other hand, water should not only be seen as a technological resource; we are continuously improving our products and solutions to provide our customers with water even in the most remote areas at a high level of efficiency without system losses due to drainage.

What´s the solution?

Grundfos is a leading company in environmentally sound solutions in Hungary and we can effectiely combine environmental resonsibility with business development. Eventough Hungary is rich in water, as a result of our group’s global commitment  and also due to our dedication to sustainability we feel, that managing water sparingly and thoughtfully is our responsibility. Our aim is the effective use of water to during our production processes as well as during our product development, and to further decrease our freshwater use from the already conscious levels (based on industry benchmarks). Development is supported by clear targets, action plans and monthly regular monitoring, our employee are motivated to be water.cnscious at each technological step.

Business connection

Saving on water use results in less financial advantage then saving on energy or waste, being an initiative that goes beyond normal business operation. Moreover, saving water by altering existing production technologies risks may rise related to quaity/emissions. However we believe, that a responsible and sustainably compnay, producing pumps, should be a role modell when it comes to water efficiency, and develop this culture within the company, in the business and in Hungary.

Results

During the past years we have achieved the following savings:

  • decreasing irrigation and use of decorative fountains (yearly about 3000 m3 saving)
  • decreasing communal use by the implementation of perlators (about 600 perlators, cc. 1200 m3 saving/year)
  • increasing rainwater use (extending the use of the rainwater tank use built at GMH4, used for GMH3 toilet flushing, irrigation, tester water refill, cc. 2800m3 saving per year)
  • preserve the quality of tester tank water for less regular change (biodegradable chemicals, multi-step filtering, cc. 6-800 m3 per year saving)
  • utilising the reatined water after production of ion-exchanged water (planned action – collect in tanks, use for washing equipment as part of a mix)
