Garbage is not waste, it is rather full of inspiring possibilities. We know that by using the right technologies and methods, large amount of the waste can be kept in the material cycle: to be reused, recycled, and to serve as the raw material for renewable energy sources. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the volume of organic waste that arrives to landfills. Being faithful to our philosophy, we’re constantly working to improve our processes and to recycle the waste in a more environmentally conscious way, ensuring that it will re-create generate an economic value. We highly strongly support the expansion of renewable energy sources: with through the collected food waste we supply raw materials for biogas generation purposes, and with the collected used cooking oil that has been collected we supply biodiesel plants. Last year – with the help of our partners – we were able to manage oversee the recycling process of for more than 10. 000 tons of organic waste.

Solutions of the macro-sustainability challenges

Shift to low carbon economy by increasing effective energy use and industrial energy efficiency, promoting clean and environmentally friendly technologies and life cycle assessment

Further targets:

What´s the solution?

In order to fully recycle the collected food waste, Biofilter Co. is operating a national collection network and also an environmental (ISO 14001) and a quality management (ISO 9001) system. From the HoReCa and FMCG area, we collect and process expired food and waste that is not allowed to be marketed. The processed food waste provides raw material supplies for biogas plants in Hungary, which can generate electrical and thermal energy out of the biogas.

Business connection

We believe that all kinds of waste can be used as a raw material – and keeping materials in a circular economy, for example using for energy production – serves sustainability goals.. As food waste and animal by-products are used as raw materials for biogas production, this recycling technology is not only an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution, but also beneficial from a business point of view. At the end of the process biogas is used to produce electrical and thermal energy.

Results

In 2014, Biofilter collected around 5,000 tons of food waste contrywide. This quantity amounted to 12,000 tons of food waste and animal by-products collected by the Holding. Our most important business priority is the ’zero waste’ philosophy – manage to reduce food waste and create 100% recycble and sustainable energy. In Hungary, biogas has a 2% share of the total renewable energy industry and it is constantly growing.
